“basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas can cause substantial illness and if untreated can cause considerable damage and disfigurement.”

There are many risk factors associated with non-melanoma skin cancers:
- Those people who have light skin color, blond or red hair, the inability to tan and blue or light colored eyes exhibit qualities increasing the likelihood of developing non-melanomas.
- Adults who received severe sunburns during childhood, and/or who developed freckles during childhood are also at higher risk.
- A family or personal history of skin cancer in addition to being over the age of 40 years and of Celtic ancestry adds to these risks.
- People who live closer to the equator, or who work outside without using protection from the sun develop non-melanomas more frequently than the general public.
- Medical conditions such as Xeroderma Pigmentosum, and Human Papillomavirus increases ones chance of developing skin cancers.
Something You Might Not Know…
The risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma is increased in people who have had organ transplants, particularly kidney or heart transplants (risk is three-fold higher than for age-matched renal transplant recipients).
This is attributed to the fact that medications that suppress the immune system preventing organ rejection also allow skin cancers to grow.
Skin cancer is considered the most common malignant condition in organ transplant recipients (OTR) and accounts for substantial mortality and morbidity in these patients.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma occurs 65 times as frequently in OTR than in the general public. In addition, squamous cell cancers are considered more aggressive in OTRs than in the general public.
They occur in high-risk locations such as the temple, ear, forehead and lips.
They exhibit multiple rapid local recurrences and an aggressive growth pattern with deep invasion.
